Appearance

Measuring about 1” in length at maturity, the oriental cockroach is dark brown to black in color and have a glossy body.  Male oriental cockroaches have long wings that cover two-thirds of their abodomen and have narrrower bodies than females.  At first glance, female oriental cockroaches appear to be wingless, but they actually have non-functional (brachypterous) wings just below their heads. The oriental cockroach tends to travel somewhat slower than other cockroach species.

Where Do They Live?

Oriental cockroaches can often be found around decaying organic matter in sewers, drains, and damp basement voids. They can also be found around the exterior of buildings in areas such as dumpsters, underneath bushes, leaves, or mulch and around gutter spouts. Oriental cockroaches have the ability to survive long periods of time without food or water.

Reproduction

Female oriental cockroaches protect their egg capsules by gluing it to a secluded and secure surface such as furniture. This allows for the population to be transported into new previously non-infested areas.
