Rat Control

Order: Rodentia

Family: Muridae

Scientific Name: Rattus norvegicus

The Norway rat also known as the brown rat, or sewer rat is one of the most common and destructive urban pests in New York City.  These rodents are expert burrowers, highly adaptable, and pose serious public health risks.  known carriers of disease such as leptospirosis and salmonella, Norway rats breed rapidly and can infest homes, businesses, and sewer systems.  Effective norway rat control requires targeted rodent extermination and long-term prevention strategies.

Appearance

Norway rats are large and robust rodents.  Adults typically measure between 13-18 inches from nose to tail and can weigh up to one pound. They have coarse brown or gray fur, a blunt snout, small ears, and a thick, scaly tail that is shorter than thier body.  unlike mice, Norway rats have a sockier build, smaller eyes, and have larger droppings- about the size and shape of a saisin.  Proper identification is critical for effective rat control and prevention in urban, and sub-urban environments.

Where Do They Live?

Norway rats prefer to nest in underground burrows, but scientific studies show they tend to live within 12 to 18 inches above or below human activity, making homesand businesses ideal targets.  they often exploit structural vulnerabilities to gain entry, causing significant damage by gnawing on wood, insulation and electrical wiring.  A rat infestation presents serious health hazards-rat urine and droppings can release airborne pathogens that compromise indoor air quality.  Other risks include gastrointestinal illness, flea-borne diseases, allergic reactions from shed fur, and in rare cases, rat bites.  Norway rats thrive in unsanitary conditions, so sanitation and exclusion are essential for effective rat control.
