Ant Control in Dix Hills

On a wooded acre in Dix Hills the carpenter ant colony is usually outdoors — in a stump, a woodpile, a landscape timber or a limb with heartwood decay — and what is inside the house is a satellite nest working out of a wet corner. Treating the house alone leaves the parent colony intact and the traffic resumes.

Why is the colony usually not in the house?

Because on a wooded acre the best wet wood on the property is rarely the building.

A carpenter ant colony runs as a parent nest plus satellites. The parent holds the queen and the eggs, and eggs and young larvae die if they dry out, so the parent nest needs timber that is genuinely and continuously wet. Satellite nests hold workers, older larvae and pupae, which tolerate drier conditions, and a satellite will happily occupy a void that contains almost no wood at all. Traffic runs between the two along fixed routes.

Now look at what Dix Hills offers each of them.

The parent has an embarrassment of choice. This is 15.9 square miles of land with no harbor, no creek, no river and no pond anywhere in it, on glacial ground that drains fast, at the southern end of the Town of Huntington. What it has instead is trees, and depth: roughly 8,067 housing units of which 7,647 — 94.8 per cent — are detached houses, most of them on lots measured in fractions of an acre and upward, with mature canopy, old planting and sixty years of accumulated garden structure.

The satellite gets a modern house. Median construction year 1970, with about 2,948 units from the 1960s, 1,821 from the 1970s and 1,050 from the 1980s. Poured foundations, framed walls, insulated cavities, plenty of voids, warm all winter. Nothing there suits a queen; a great deal of it suits fifty workers and a batch of pupae.

The practical consequence is that on this stock the survey has to leave the building. A job worked entirely at the foundation line will find the satellite, remove it, and be back the following year, because the parent colony simply repopulates a site it already knows. Ryan’s position on this work is the same as everywhere else — the insect is a symptom and the property is the case — but here the property is much larger than the house.

What does a 300-foot foraging range mean on an acre?

That the colony’s territory is larger than your deed, and the arithmetic is worth doing once.

The Northeastern IPM Center gives a foraging distance of up to 300 feet from the nest. An acre is 43,560 square feet, so a square acre measures about 209 feet on a side. Put a nest at one corner of a square acre and a 300-foot radius reaches every point on that lot with well over eighty feet to spare in most directions — which means it also reaches across the road, over the rear fence and into the two properties either side.

Three things follow, and they change how the work is scoped.

The whole property is in play, not just the perimeter of the house. The pool house, the shed, the detached garage, the pergola, the play structure, the timber retaining wall holding a bank, the fence line, the wood line at the back — all of it is inside the radius, and several of those are made of the material the parent colony is looking for.

The neighbor is inside the radius too. On a street of similar lots, the parent nest may be twenty feet the wrong side of a boundary. That is an honest limit rather than an excuse: where we cannot reach the colony, the job changes from elimination to making the structure unattractive and the routes into it unusable, and the proposal should say so in those words rather than implying something it cannot deliver.

Distance explains the sightings that look impossible. A homeowner reports two or three large ants a night in a kitchen, on a property with no visible damage anywhere. That is entirely consistent with a mature colony in a stump at the back of the lot sending foragers up the driveway curb, along the garage wall and in at a door threshold. It is also consistent with a satellite in a wall. Telling those two apart is the whole of the first visit, and it is done by watching where the traffic goes rather than by counting the ants.

What is in the ground and on top of it after three centuries of farming?

Wood, in quantity, at exactly the moisture content a queen is looking for.

The land history here runs long. The Carll family held over 6,000 acres here from 1701, with a log cabin on it and, by the middle of the eighteenth century, a track called Carll’s Straight Path running between two of their farms. By the last years of that century roughly forty families were working subdivided parcels, most of them two or three hundred acres apiece. The roads came afterwards — Jericho Turnpike laid over the old east-west trail in 1817, the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway in 1908, the Northern State reaching Commack Road in 1950 — and the subdivisions followed the roads. Which is why the hamlet’s median build year is 1970 and its lots are large: the 1950s belt further north was already full when the Expressway arrived.

An inheritance of that kind leaves timber all over a modern lot, and for a carpenter ant colony every piece of it is real estate rather than food.

Old field boundaries. Hedgerows and field edges tended to become rear property lines when the land was subdivided, so a whole row of houses can share one rear boundary with a line of stumps and rotting posts buried along it.

Buried construction wood. Speed and tidiness do not go together on a subdivision. Cut ends, form boards, stakes and stumps went under the backfill because that was quicker than loading them onto a truck, and this hamlet raised thousands of houses in two decades.

Landscape timber. Raised borders and edging built from railway sleepers and pressure-treated timber in the seventies and eighties are still sitting in the soil on plenty of these lots, often close enough to the house to matter. Pressure treatment slows decay; it does not stop forty years of it at the ground line.

Ground stumps. A tree taken out and ground flush leaves the root plate and the lower trunk intact under the grass. Nothing shows from above, and it stays wet.

The instruction that follows is unglamorous and effective. Walk the old field lines, walk the wood line, and get stacked and buried timber off the property. Most of it needs a spade and an afternoon rather than a contractor, and it removes nest sites rather than occupants.

Where does a 1970s house actually go soft?

At the seams somebody cut into it later, and at four details the era built as standard.

Only about 133 units here predate 1940, so there is essentially no hand-framed stock and none of the sill-on-fieldstone problems that dominate the older hamlets. What there is instead is fifty years of alteration on houses that were designed to be extended.

The converted garage and the opened wall. Where a garage became living space or a wall was opened for an addition, the header, the infill framing and the new junction were worked out on site. Flashing at that junction is the item most often improvised, and the framing behind it is the item most often wet.

The deck ledger. A ledger bolted flat to a band joist with no flashing over it is the standard 1970s and 1980s detail, and it is wet on both faces for its whole length. It is also the piece of framing that carries the deck, which is why the finding is worth having for reasons beyond insects.

The bay or box window. Hung off the wall or sat on a small footing, with a floor deck under it, an apartment or near-flat roof detail over it, and a cavity inside that nobody has opened since it was built. The roof detail has usually been quietly failing since the 1990s, and the box is a ready-made void with wet timber in it.

The soffit return and the two-story wall. These are big houses with long, complex rooflines. Where a gable eave wraps a corner and dies into a two-story wall, the return forms a small boxed cavity at height, with a flat top, a mitre that opens as timber moves, and a junction to the wall on two planes. Ants entering there arrive inside the house at a second-floor ceiling.

The chimney chase and the skylight well. A framed chase around a metal flue, and a shaft between a skylight and a cathedral ceiling, are both tall closed cavities with a flashed opening at the top of them. When either flashing goes, the water runs down inside the cavity and the damage shows up nowhere near the leak.

Read together, these say something specific about where to look on this stock: high, and in a box. The trail may appear at a kitchen baseboard. The gallery is frequently two floors above it.

What does the canopy do to a long roof?

It keeps one part of the building permanently wet and gives the ants a bridge over everything you have done at ground level.

The high ground here is the Harbor Hill moraine, the glacial spine that carries Jayne’s Hill, which at 400.9 feet on Suffolk County’s figure — 387 on the federal names register — is the island’s summit, standing in West Hills County Park a short distance north. Ground of that origin drains well. The trees on it are old, and on a large-lot subdivision that was cut out of woodland rather than out of farmland, a great deal of that canopy was left standing over the houses.

Four consequences, all of them ordinary and all of them cumulative.

Shaded roof planes never dry. A north or east roof under continuous canopy holds moss and stays damp for weeks at a time. The sheathing under it dries more slowly than the rest of the building, and the eave, the fascia and the rafter tails at that edge are the first framing to go soft.

Valleys collect. A complex 1970s roofline has several valleys, each of which concentrates both water and needle and leaf litter. A valley that is packed is a dam, and what a dam does is push water sideways under the shingle course into the sheathing.

Gutters carry a season’s leaf load. Hung aluminum gutters overflow when they block, which is visible and mostly harmless — except at the corner where the overflow lands on the same two feet of siding every autumn for twenty years.

And a limb touching the roof is a road. This is the one worth acting on first. A branch bearing on a gutter, a fascia or a corner of the building lets foragers reach the roofline without crossing a single square foot of treated ground. On a wooded acre, one limb can explain an entire job.

None of that argues for taking down the canopy. It argues for cutting limbs back off the building, keeping valleys and gutters clear, and accepting that on this ground the roofline is as much a part of an ant survey as the foundation.

How do you follow a trail across an acre in the dark?

Deliberately, at about ten in the evening, working outward rather than inward.

Carpenter ants forage mainly at night, and a property that shows nothing at two in the afternoon can be busy after dusk. On a small lot that is a convenience. On an acre with mature planting it is the difference between finding the colony and not.

Start where the ants get into the building. Threshold, garage jamb, hose bib, dryer vent, the gap behind a corner board, a utility penetration. Stand there for a few minutes with a flashlight held low, and watch which way the traffic goes when it leaves.

Follow the edges. Ants trail along lines rather than across open ground: the driveway curb, the base of a fence, a landscape edging strip, a hose left on the lawn, an irrigation line, the trunk of a tree. On a big property the trail almost always runs an edge, which makes it followable at walking pace.

Expect it to end at something wooden. A stump. A woodpile. A retaining timber. The base of a dead limb. A pergola post set into soil. A shed sill sitting on blocks that have settled into the ground. That endpoint is the finding, and it is frequently a hundred feet or more from the room where the complaint started.

Note the direction of carry. Workers returning to a nest are the ones worth following, and a worker carrying something is heading home.

Then treat the endpoint, not the trail. Removing the trail removes the map. Material placed on an established route and carried back does work that a contact application on a visible line cannot, because it reaches the part of the colony that produces the next generation of foragers.

Twenty minutes of that on a mild June night is worth more than an hour of daytime inspection on this stock, and it is the single technique that most often turns a recurring job into a finished one.

Which of these ants is it, and could it be a termite?

Size and variation answer the first question in most cases. The second one takes a specimen and about thirty seconds.

Carpenter ant workers within one colony come in a spread of sizes rather than a single size, which is a genuinely useful field cue: a trail where some individuals are obviously larger than others is not a trail of small dark kitchen ants. They are mainly nocturnal, and the evidence they leave is coarse, fibrous, pale spoil pushed out of a gallery — shredded wood with insect fragments and shed brood skins through it, quite unlike fine powder or a contractor’s sawdust. University of New Hampshire Extension notes the further distinction that their galleries are clean and smooth-walled, with none of the soil packing that a subterranean insect leaves.

Pavement ants turn up at the joints in a driveway, an apron or a patio, with small craters of grit beside them. The pavement ant profile covers them, and on a large lot the answer is nearly always at the soil-to-slab transition rather than in the house.

Odorous house ants appear indoors in numbers after heavy rain when their shallow outdoor nests flood, and split into more colonies if a trail is sprayed. See odorous house ant.

Then the spring question. Winged forms of both insects appear in the same few weeks, and on a wooded lot either can come out of ground-level timber well away from the building, so where you saw them settles nothing. The insect does. Look for the waist: an ant is pinched, a termite is not. Then the antennae: elbowed on the ant, straight and beaded on the termite. Then the wings: two unequal pairs against four identical ones that come off in a heap. Keep a few specimens in a sealed bag. If they turn out to be termites, we will say so and you will need a firm that treats them, because that is not work Graduate does. If they turn out to be carpenter ants — and on this stock they usually do — everything else on this page applies.

What has to be corrected here, and in what order?

Outward first, then upward, then the building, and the cheapest items come first.

Clear the wood. Woodpile onto a rack, off the soil, away from the wall. Buried offcuts out. Old landscape timber lifted where it can be lifted. Stumps and root plates dug rather than ground where a colony is actually in one. This is the item most often skipped and it is the one that removes parent nest sites rather than occupants.

Cut the building free of the canopy. Limbs off the roof and off the walls, valleys and gutters cleared, and enough clearance that the roofline is not permanently shaded on one side.

Deal with the mature planting. Foundation beds planted small in 1972 are now against the siding, holding moisture against the base of the wall and hiding the only course anybody needs to look at. Get the soil back off the cladding, and cut the shrubs away from the wall.

Correct the scheduled water. Irrigation heads throwing at siding, a pool backwash always going to the same corner, an air-conditioning drain running onto a bed from May to October. These are small, continuous and predictable, and a colony works from exactly that.

Then repair the seams. The addition junction, the deck ledger flashing, the bay window roof detail, the chimney chase flashing, the soffit return that has lost section. A treatment can finish a colony. It cannot put section back into a member, and a soft member remains available to whatever comes next.

Then treat, where the nest is. Not a perimeter band around a house whose colony lives in a stump beyond the pool.

What does the ant year look like on this ground?

Five phases, and the wooded lot shifts two of them.

Late March into April. Activity resumes. Ants indoors before anything is moving outdoors mean a satellite inside the heated envelope, which is the most useful single sighting of the year and the only weeks it is available.

April into June. The winged forms, and the identification question. On a wooded acre they may emerge from a stump a hundred feet out rather than from the building, so where they came from matters more than how many there were.

June through August. Peak foraging and the best window for the night walk, because the traffic is heaviest and the trails are followable. Also when spoil accumulates visibly beneath active galleries.

September into November. The right season for the correction work — limb removal, gutter and valley clearing, flashing repairs, timber removal, bed lowering. A correction made now is tested by the autumn rain rather than discovered next April.

December into February. The colony is quiet outdoors and undetectable. Indoors it is not: an ant walking a warm floor in January is living inside the building, which is worth acting on in January rather than waiting for April. Winter has a second use as well. A cold, windless morning will show you where heat is escaping a building, and those joints track the ones letting water in.

Why would the nest be outside if the ants are in my kitchen?

Because a carpenter ant colony is not one object. The parent nest holds the queen and the eggs and needs genuinely wet wood, which on a wooded acre is easier to find in a stump or a woodpile than in a heated house. Satellites hold workers and older brood, tolerate drier conditions, and are what turns up in a wall void or a bay window box.

How far can they be traveling?

The Northeastern IPM Center puts the foraging distance at up to 300 feet from a nest. A square acre is roughly 209 feet on a side, so that radius covers your whole lot and reaches into the properties either side of it. On this stock the search area is genuinely larger than the deed.

Is my woodpile really the problem?

It is the most common single finding on these properties. Split wood stacked on bare ground against a garage or a fence stays damp at the bottom of the stack all year, and that is exactly the material a parent colony wants. Getting it up on a rack, off the soil and away from the building is free and it changes the site.

There is almost nothing pre-war here. Does age not protect the houses?

No, because the ants are reading moisture rather than build date. Only about 133 units in the hamlet date from 1939 or earlier, and the colonies we find are in rear additions, deck ledgers, bay projections and converted garages — places where an original wall was opened later and the flashing was worked out on site.

We heard rustling in a bedroom wall but the ants are downstairs. Why?

Because foraging and nesting happen in different places, and workers travel along structural lines — joists, pipe runs, wiring chases — rather than through rooms. A dry rustle inside a wall late at night, heard from a quiet room, locates a gallery far better than the trail does.

What is left in the ground from when this was farmland?

Stumps along old field boundaries that became rear property lines, fence posts, buried construction offcuts from a fast 1960s and 1970s build-out, and landscape timbers installed in the seventies and eighties. All of it is wood in soil, and all of it holds moisture the way a colony needs.

Could this be termites rather than carpenter ants?

It could, and on wooded ground both insects fly in the same spring weeks. A carpenter ant has a pinched waist, elbowed antennae and unequal wing pairs; a termite has no waist, straight beaded antennae and four matching wings. If a specimen turns out to be a termite, Graduate does not do that work and will tell you so rather than quoting for it.

Do I have to take down the trees?

Almost never. What matters is dead wood rather than living canopy — a limb with heartwood decay, a storm-felled trunk left where it fell, a stump ground level with the lawn but still solid below it. Removing those is targeted work, and it is a different conversation from clearing a wooded lot.
