Bald-Faced Hornet

A bald-faced hornet builds the large gray paper envelope you see hanging from a limb, a soffit or a gable end, with a single guarded entrance near the bottom. The colony is annual and dies off over winter, but the nest is defended hard through late summer, and removal is done after dark.

What does the nest look like, and what is inside it?

Identify this species by its architecture. The nest is the diagnosis, and it is unmistakable once described properly.

A mature bald-faced hornet nest is a closed gray envelope, roughly teardrop or football-shaped, suspended from a branch, a shrub, a fence, a soffit, a gable end, a wall or a light fixture. The surface has a swirled, banded appearance, because it is built from wood fiber rasped off weathered timber and chewed into a pulp, and different sources produce different shades. A large one reaches the size of a basketball, and the whole structure hangs free with a single small entrance hole near the bottom, usually with a guard or two sitting at it.

Inside, out of sight, the envelope encloses several horizontal tiers of hexagonal comb stacked one above another, connected by short stalks, with the brood in the cells and the queen laying somewhere in the middle of it. The envelope itself is multi-layered, and the air trapped between the layers insulates the colony. As the population grows, workers chew the inner layers away and add new material to the outside, which is why the nest expands steadily all summer without ever being rebuilt.

The insect. Large and heavy-bodied for a wasp — noticeably bigger than a yellowjacket — matt black with striking ivory-white markings on the face, at the front of the thorax and across the last segments of the abdomen. The white face is where the common name comes from and it is visible at a surprising distance. There is no yellow anywhere on it, which distinguishes it instantly from everything else in this group.

What it is not. It is not a true hornet, despite the name. Taxonomically it sits with the aerial yellowjackets, and it behaves like a very large yellowjacket that builds in the open rather than in a hole. It is also not the European hornet, which is a genuinely large brown-and-yellow wasp that nests in hollow trees, wall voids and attics, flies after dark and comes to lights — that species behaves like a cavity nester and is handled as one.

The reason to sort this out at the first phone call is that the removal method follows from the architecture and nothing else. An exposed envelope is one kind of job. Where do they build, and why does position matter more than species?

Because whether a nest is a problem at all is decided almost entirely by where it hangs.

In trees and shrubs. The default. A limb ten to thirty feet up, a dense ornamental, a hedge, or the interior of a large shrub. On wooded lots across Suffolk County and the North Shore this is by far the most common location, and a nest that is genuinely out of the way is a nest that can often be left.

On the building. This is where it becomes our problem. Under a soffit or in a soffit return, tucked against a gable end, beneath a deck, in the corner of a porch ceiling, on a shed wall, under an overhanging eave, on the underside of a second-floor balcony, behind a shutter, on a light fixture, in a carport, or against the wall inside an open garage. The requirement is an overhead surface with shelter from rain and a clear approach, and any building with generous eaves offers several.

On structures in the yard. Playsets, arbors, pergolas, fence corners, gate posts, sheds, boat covers, and the underside of outdoor furniture that has not moved since spring.

The position determines three things. First, whether people and pets are inside the defended radius routinely — a nest above a back door, over a walkway, beside a bedroom window, next to a play area or near an air intake is an active hazard regardless of the insect’s reputation. Second, whether the nest can be reached safely and worked on from a stable position, or whether it involves a ladder against the same wall the colony is defending. Third, whether removing it is worth doing at all.

That last point deserves saying plainly, because a pest control company advising against work is unusual. A bald-faced hornet colony is a predator, and through the summer it removes a very large quantity of flies, caterpillars and other insects from your property. A nest thirty feet up an oak at the back of a wooded lot, well away from any route anyone uses, is doing you a favor and will be dead by December. If it is not near a door, a path, a window, a play area or a work area, the honest recommendation is often to leave it and remove the empty envelope in the winter.

What happens across the season, and why does the nest seem to appear overnight?

Because the colony is an annual project that runs from one insect in spring to several hundred by September, and for most of that time it is hidden by leaves.

Spring. A single fertilised queen that overwintered somewhere sheltered emerges and looks for a site. She builds a small envelope — walnut-sized, then apple-sized — raises the first batch of workers herself, and is entirely alone and effectively harmless for several weeks. This is the only point in the year when a nest can be dealt with by anyone with a long stick and a bit of nerve, and it is why a slow walk around your eaves and shrubs in late spring is genuinely worth the twenty minutes.

Early summer. The first workers take over foraging, building and brood care. The queen becomes a full-time egg layer. Growth compounds from here, because every worker added increases the rate at which more workers can be raised. Foraging is predatory: flies, caterpillars and other soft-bodied insects, caught and processed to feed the larvae.

High summer. The envelope expands weekly. The defended radius expands with it. This is when a nest that has been present since May finally becomes visible to the household, and it explains the universal report that the nest appeared overnight. It did not; the leaves that were screening it thinned, or somebody finally looked up.

Late summer into early autumn. The worst of it, on both counts. The colony is at its largest, natural prey is declining, competition is rising, and the queen switches from producing workers to producing next year’s reproductives. Workers become more aggressive in defense and forage further afield. Almost every incident on a residential property happens in this window.

Autumn. New queens mate and disperse to find overwintering shelter. The founding queen and the entire worker force die with sustained cold. The envelope is finished and will not be occupied again.

The practical reading is that a nest found in June is small, low-risk and cheap to handle, while the same nest found in September is a considerably more careful piece of work. Neither is a reason to wait for the frost, because a nest over a doorway is a hazard for the eight weeks in between.

How dangerous is it, and when should people stay clear?

More than a paper wasp, differently from a yellowjacket, and the injury is often not the sting.

Bald-faced hornets are strongly defensive around the envelope. They respond to a person approaching, and they respond even more reliably to vibration — which is why the trigger is so often a mower, a string trimmer, a hedge cutter, a pressure washer or a ladder set against the same wall rather than a person quietly walking underneath. They can sting repeatedly, unlike a honey bee, and a disturbed colony sends out many workers at once. They will pursue an intruder a fair distance from the nest.

Four situations change the risk materially, and they are worth knowing before anyone decides to handle this with a can from the hardware store.

A known venom allergy. A systemic reaction is a medical emergency and is not proportional to the number of stings. Anyone in that category should be nowhere near the work, and the household should know where their prescribed medication is. Anything beyond that is a conversation for a physician, not for us.

Multiple stings from a disturbed nest. This is the scenario that produces the serious incidents, and it comes from opening the envelope — knocking it, hosing it, hitting it with a trimmer, or spraying it inadequately from the ground so that it is provoked but not neutralised.

Stings around the face, mouth or throat, which are dangerous regardless of allergy status because of the swelling.

Working at height. A very large share of the injuries associated with nest removal are falls. Someone on a ladder at arm’s length from a soffit, stung once, reacts — and the fall is the injury. This is the single strongest argument for not improvising.

While you are waiting for an appointment: identify the flight line by watching from a distance rather than approaching, and keep people and pets off it. Do not swat at a hornet near the nest, because a crushed wasp releases alarm pheromone that recruits others. Close off a doorway or a path under a nest rather than teaching everyone to duck. Suspend mowing and trimming in that part of the yard. And do not work at midday, when a large share of the foragers are out and will come back to a disturbed nest and an exposed person.

What are the signs before you see the nest?

Traffic, rasped wood and a flight line — and any of the three will lead you to an envelope you have not spotted yet.

A defined flight line. The most reliable early indicator. Stand well back and watch: a steady, purposeful two-way stream of large black-and-white wasps traveling along the same aerial route, rather than individuals wandering. Follow the line with your eyes and it converges on the nest. Foragers scattered around a bin or a fallen apple tell you little, because those may be coming from a neighboring property.

Rasped patches on weathered wood. Bald-faced hornets gather building material by shaving fiber from bare, weathered timber, and they leave shallow, pale, streaked grooves where they have been working. Fence rails, deck boards, unpainted siding, shed walls, garden furniture and old playsets all show it. Finding fresh rasping on a fence is direct evidence of a colony within a fairly short distance.

A guard at a hole. On a nest partly hidden by foliage or tucked into a soffit return, the visible part is often just the entrance and the two or three workers sitting at it.

Sound. A large nest is audible from a few feet away on a hot afternoon — a low continuous hum from inside the envelope.

Insects at the wrong height. Repeated encounters with the same large black wasp at the top of a deck stair, at a first-floor window, or along one particular fence run usually mean the nest is directly above or behind that spot.

Falling debris. Small flecks of paper and the occasional dead worker on a deck, a windowsill or a car roof, directly beneath an overhead structure.

How is an aerial nest actually dealt with?

At dusk or after dark, from a stable position, neutralised before it is touched, and then physically taken down.

Timing within the day is not optional. Work is done when the foraging force has returned and the colony is least active. At midday a large fraction of the workers are out in the field, and they come back to find their nest under attack and a person on a ladder beneath it. After dark the population is home and settled, and the whole job is safer for everyone.

Position first. Before anything else: where the ladder can be footed safely, what the escape route is, who else is in the house or the yard, whether anyone present has a venom allergy, and whether the nest is against a surface that will be damaged. On a soffit or a gable-end nest, the additional question is whether the envelope has been built partly into a cavity, because a nest that continues behind a soffit panel is not an aerial job any more.

Neutralise before contact. The colony is treated first and the envelope is left alone until it is quiet. Knocking a live nest down, hosing it or bagging it while it is active is the reliable route to a bad afternoon.

Then take the nest down. Unlike a cavity colony, an exposed nest can and should be physically removed once the colony is finished. That takes away any remaining brood, removes the visual alarm — a hanging nest keeps a family out of their own yard long after it is empty — and avoids the mess of an abandoned envelope shedding paper, dead insects and debris through the winter onto whatever is beneath it.

Then look at the surface it was on. This is the part that separates a removal from a piece of building work. If the nest was on the structure, the questions are what made that spot attractive, whether the envelope has stained or damaged the surface, and — importantly — whether there is a cavity behind it that a future queen could use. A soffit return that hosted an exposed nest this year is an excellent candidate for a concealed colony next year.

What we do not do is treat honey bees. If what is on your building turns out to be a honey bee swarm or an established colony, that is a beekeeping matter with its own structural complications, and we will tell you so and point you toward the right kind of help rather than treating them.

What changes when the nest is on the building rather than in a tree?

Everything about the follow-up, because a nest attached to a structure raises questions a nest on a branch never does.

Is it fully exposed, or does it continue into a cavity? This is the first thing to establish and it is easy to get wrong from the ground. A colony that started under a soffit or in a soffit return will sometimes expand back into the boxed void behind it, so what looks like a hanging envelope is actually the visible portion of something larger sitting in the eave. The tell is the traffic: if insects are disappearing behind the envelope rather than into the hole at its base, the nest has a cavity component and the job changes. A colony that has moved into a framing bay is treated at the entrance and left in place, which is the approach set out on the eastern yellowjacket page, rather than being cut down.

What is on the other side of the surface? A nest against a gable end has a rafter bay behind it. A nest under a porch ceiling has a joist space above it. A nest against a wall may be a few inches of sheathing away from a bedroom. Knowing what the assembly is determines both how the work is done and how urgent it is.

What has the nest done to the surface? A mature envelope pressed against painted trim, siding or a soffit panel holds moisture against it for months and frequently leaves staining, softened paint and occasionally decay in the timber underneath. Once the nest is off, that surface wants inspecting and, usually, cleaning and repainting.

What made the spot attractive, and is it still? A deep overhang, a sheltered return, a covered deck frame or a recessed entry offers exactly the protection a founding queen wants, and it will offer it again next spring. You cannot design that out of a house, but you can note the location, check it in May, and make sure there is no open cavity behind it for a colony to expand into.

And where the nest was on a deck or a porch, the frame beneath is worth a look while the ladder is out. Bare weathered joists and rail undersides in the same location are usually carrying carpenter bee galleries, and the two get found on the same visit more often than not.

Why does the same house get a nest year after year?

Because the nest is new every season but the queens are local, and a good share of them spend the winter in your building.

The envelope is never reused. What repeats is the supply of foundresses. New queens produced by a colony in September do not travel far. They mate, then look for somewhere sheltered, dry and frost-protected to spend the winter — under loose bark, in a rotting log, in a woodpile, in leaf litter, and, very often, inside the structure itself. The candidate list in a building is exactly the list we already care about: behind loose siding, in a gable louver with failed screening, in an unheated attic corner, behind a shutter, under a lifted soffit panel, inside a hollow porch column, behind fascia, in a shed, in a detached garage, and in the void behind a piece of exterior trim.

So a property that supported a large colony one summer has an elevated density of queens looking for nest sites the following spring, and the best sheltered overhang within a short distance is the one that worked last time. That is why the complaint is so often “we get one every year in the same corner.”

This is where an aerial-nesting species turns back into a building problem, which is not obvious and is the most useful idea on this page. You cannot seal a tree branch. You can absolutely reduce the number of queens that overwinter in your envelope, by closing the same details that matter for everything else on the roofline: rescreening gable louvers from behind in metal, closing soffit returns properly, reseating ridge vent end caps, closing fascia gaps, securing lifted trim and siding, and screening weep holes rather than filling them. That is ordinary structural exclusion work, and it quietly lowers next year’s pressure while it is closing the building to squirrels, mice and everything else.

What reduces the chance of a nest next season?

A spring walk, a closed envelope and some judgment about which nests actually matter.

Walk the property in late spring, looking up. Eaves, soffit returns, porch ceilings, deck undersides, arbors, shed walls, playsets and the interior of dense shrubs. A founding nest at that stage is small, contains one insect, and is trivially dealt with. This is the highest-value fifteen minutes available on this subject all year.

Close the overwintering harborage before autumn. The louver screening, the soffit and fascia gaps, the lifted siding, the shutter gap, the hollow column. It is the same work list that keeps rodents and squirrels out, which is why it tends to get scoped as one job rather than several.

Manage the surfaces they build against. Nests need shelter from rain and something to hang from. There is a limit to how much of that you can design out of a house, but keeping shrubs from growing into an eave, keeping open garages and sheds closed at night in spring, storing playsets and furniture covered, and not leaving an unused grill or an upturned wheelbarrow undisturbed all remove candidate sites.

Deal with the wood they harvest from, or accept it. Rasping on a weathered fence is not damage worth worrying about, but it does tell you a colony is close, and it is a useful early-season prompt to go and look for the nest while it is still small.

Remove empty nests in the winter, once you are certain the colony is finished, particularly if the envelope is attached to the building rather than to a tree.

And be selective. Not every nest is a problem, and a household that removes a nest thirty feet up at the back of a wooded lot has spent money to lose a summer’s worth of insect predation. The nests worth dealing with are the ones on a route people use.

Common questions

Is a bald-faced hornet a real hornet?

Not in the strict sense. It is a large aerial-nesting relative of the yellowjackets rather than a true hornet, which is why it looks and behaves like an oversized yellowjacket that decided to build in the open. The practical point is the nest: a hanging gray envelope rather than a hidden cavity colony.

How is the nest different from a yellowjacket nest?

Position and visibility. A bald-faced hornet nest is an exposed gray envelope suspended in the open where you can see all of it. A yellowjacket colony is the same basic architecture built inside a void — a lawn burrow, a wall cavity, a space under a step — where you see only the entrance hole and the traffic.

The nest appeared overnight. How is that possible?

It did not. A nest that size took the whole summer to build, starting from something the size of a walnut in late spring. What changed in August is that it outgrew the foliage screening it, or a leaf drop exposed it, and it went from invisible to obvious on a branch people had walked past for two months.

Can I knock the nest down or spray it from the ground?

This is how most stinging incidents on residential property happen. Knocking or hosing an occupied envelope opens it and releases a large, coordinated defensive response, and doing it from a ladder converts a sting into a fall. If the nest is anywhere near a route people use, it is not a job to improvise.

How close can I safely get?

Further than you think, and the flight line matters as much as the nest. Workers defend a radius around the envelope and they respond to vibration, so a mower, a trimmer, a hedge cutter or a ladder against the same wall all count as provocation. Watch from a distance and keep the path in and out of the nest clear of people.

Will the same nest be used again next year?

Never. The colony dies with sustained cold and the envelope is abandoned permanently. What does repeat is the site, because new queens overwinter close to where they were produced, so a property that supported a large colony has more queens looking for a spot the following spring.

Should I remove an old nest in the winter?

It is worth doing once you are certain the colony is finished. An abandoned envelope degrades through the winter, sheds paper and dead insects, and the remaining brood and debris draw beetles and other scavengers into whatever is beneath it — which is a nuisance if it is hanging on your soffit rather than in a tree.

Are they doing anything useful?

Considerably more than people credit. Bald-faced hornets are predators, and through the summer the colony removes very large numbers of flies, caterpillars and other insects from the surrounding area. A nest high in a tree at the back of a wooded lot, away from any path, is often best left alone until the frost finishes it.
