Eastern Gray Squirrel

The eastern gray squirrel is a daytime tree rodent that enters attics at soffit returns, gable louvers and ridge vent ends, gnawing a small gap into a workable hole within days. What are you actually hearing above the ceiling?

Start with the hour of the day, because it narrows the field faster than anything else.

The eastern gray squirrel is diurnal. Movement above a ceiling begins around first light, quietens through the middle of the day, and picks up again through the late afternoon into dusk. It is heavy for a rodent — you hear weight rather than skittering — and it has a signature that nothing else produces: rolling and dragging. That is caching behavior, an animal moving nuts and cones around a cavity, and once you have heard it you can identify it from a bedroom.

Against the other tree squirrels. The gray squirrel is the large gray animal with a rust wash along the flanks and face, a pale underside and a broad plumed tail. Melanistic individuals occur and are entirely black; they are the same species and behave identically. The American red squirrel is noticeably smaller, rustier, far more vocal, and more common on wooded North Shore properties and in stands of conifer than in a subdivision. The southern flying squirrel is the one that catches people out, because it is nocturnal, colonial, and light on its feet — a night-time attic disturbance that sounds like a small fast rodent, with gliding animals emerging at dusk, is very likely this rather than a mouse. It matters, because flying squirrels use much smaller openings and often occupy a roof cavity in numbers.

Against a chipmunk. Striped, ground-dwelling and a burrower, so it turns up in foundation walls, under stoops and in retaining walls rather than in a roof. Activity is at ground level and the noise is in a wall base, not a ceiling.

Against rodents. House mouse activity in a ceiling is lighter, faster and concentrated after dark, and it comes with droppings of a completely different scale. A Norway rat in a Suffolk County attic is an unusual finding; rats here concentrate at and below the lowest floor.

Getting the species right before anything is placed into a void is not a formality. A rodent job puts devices into a cavity. A wildlife job has a legal and seasonal framework around it, a different removal method and a much heavier material specification on the repair. Doing the first when you needed the second is how a homeowner ends up with a sealed hole and an animal that opened a new one three feet away.

How does a squirrel get onto a roof and then into it?

By bridge, then by climb, then by gnaw — and each of those three stages is something you can look at from your own driveway.

The bridge. Squirrels are exceptional jumpers and reliable rope-walkers. Overhanging limbs are the primary route onto a roof, and the gap a squirrel can cross is larger than most people assume. Utility drops and cable service lines are used as highways and are entirely routine. A trellis, a mature vine, an arbor, a fence running to a wall, a stacked woodpile, a dumpster parked against a building, a scaffold — all of these shorten the climb.

The climb. Where there is no bridge, the animal climbs. Brick, block, stucco, rough-sawn cedar, shingle siding, a downspout, a corner board and ivy on a wall are all climbable surfaces. Height is not protection. On a New York City building, cornice work, parapet returns, fire escapes and the brick face itself all give access, and a squirrel on a roof bulkhead or behind a parapet is out of sight from the street entirely.

The gnaw. Squirrel incisors grow continuously and are worn down by use, so gnawing is a physiological requirement, not opportunism. That is why an opening a squirrel cannot fit through today is not a safe opening. A quarter-inch gap at the leading edge of a soffit panel, a lifted section of vinyl trim, a knot hole in a rake board, a soft corner of weathered fascia — the animal takes a grip and works it, and a workable hole exists within days. Weathered cedar, plywood, thin aluminum, vinyl and cured expanding foam are all defeated readily.

The productive entry points on Long Island housing stock are consistent enough to list.

Soffit returns — the small boxed triangle where a sloping roof edge wraps back to the wall at a gable end — are frequently open into the eave from the day the house is framed, because nobody sees the gap from below. On post-war subdivisions across Nassau and central Suffolk this is the most reliable squirrel entrance there is.

The soffit-to-fascia joint, particularly where vinyl soffit was installed over an older wooden assembly during a re-side. The panel is held in a channel rather than fastened along its length, and an animal that gets a claw behind the leading edge levers a section out.

Gable louvers with screening that is original, corroded or entirely absent. A louver with nothing behind it is a doorway with a nice trim detail around it.

Ridge vents, at the ends and where the external baffle has compressed or the mesh has torn.

Roof-to-wall junctions over a garage, a porch, a dormer or an addition, where the flashing detail is complicated, often done poorly, and opens straight into a framing cavity.

Attic fans, turbine vents, dormer cheeks, chimney chases and the deteriorated cornice work on older frame houses along the North Shore and on pre-war buildings in the city.

What does the squirrel year look like, and when are young inside the structure?

Two peaks of nesting activity, an autumn caching drive, and a maternity question that governs the whole schedule.

Gray squirrels have two breeding periods in a typical year in this region — one in the late winter and a second in the middle of summer — which is the single most consequential fact for scheduling exclusion work. It means there is no long, safe season in which dependent young are reliably absent from every occupied cavity, and it means the question has to be asked on every job rather than assumed from the month.

Late winter and early spring. Nesting activity in structures peaks. A female looking for a natal den wants exactly what an attic offers: elevated, dry, dark, defensible and undisturbed by anything on the ground. This is when most attic complaints begin, and it is precisely the period when a badly timed one-way device does the most harm.

Spring into early summer. Young develop in the cavity. They are helpless at first and remain dependent for a substantial period before they can climb out and follow the adult. During that window an adult removed or excluded leaves a litter behind, and that is not a subtle failure — it is decomposition inside an inaccessible cavity, odor through a ceiling for weeks, a secondary insect problem feeding on the carcasses, and a mother who will work extremely hard and destructively to get back in, often opening a second and larger hole in the process.

Mid-summer. The second breeding period. The same considerations apply, and the presence of a summer litter is frequently missed because the season does not feel like nesting season to a homeowner.

Autumn. Caching. Food is collected and stored, activity is high and noisy, and dreys built in trees during the summer become less attractive as leaves fall. Pressure on rooflines rises sharply, and this is the second big wave of calls. It is also the best moment of the year to have already done the sealing.

Winter. Gray squirrels do not hibernate. They stay active through cold weather, shelter in cavities during storms and cold snaps, and a warm dry attic is a considerably better proposition than a leaf drey in a swaying oak.

How the timing question is actually handled. Before any exclusion is scheduled, we establish whether dependent young are likely to be present, and the timing of that work is governed by current state wildlife guidance rather than by preference or convenience. If the answer is that the work has to wait, we say so and explain what the interim looks like — and waiting is not the same as doing nothing. Every secondary opening on the structure can be mapped and closed during the constrained period, so the animal’s route is reduced to one known location, the interior can be protected from traffic, and the repair scope can be prepared so exclusion proceeds immediately once the window opens.

What damage does a squirrel actually do up there?

More than the noise suggests, and the expensive part is rarely the animal itself.

Wiring. The most serious item and the one that gets the least attention. Cable sheathing is soft, chewable and lying conveniently across the tops of the ceiling joists. A squirrel gnaws because it must, and an attic with sustained activity commonly shows chewed runs. Exposed conductors in contact with framing or blown-in insulation are a fire condition. We flag it; the assessment and the repair belong to an electrician.

Insulation. A squirrel tunnels through blown-in material and compresses it along its runs, and the thermal value of insulation lies in the trapped air rather than the fiber, so compression destroys performance without looking dramatic. Where urine and droppings have saturated an area, the material holds the odor and the sound remedy is removal and replacement rather than cleaning.

Ductwork and mechanicals. Flexible duct is easily torn and is used both as a travel route and as nesting material. A separated duct dumps conditioned air into a roof cavity, which shows up as an upstairs comfort complaint and a utility bill long before anyone connects it to the animal.

Air sealing and vapor control. Torn kraft facing and disturbed air sealing let humid interior air into a cold roof cavity, where it condenses on the underside of the sheathing. That is a decay mechanism, and rot in a roof deck is a structural repair rather than a pest bill.

The structure at the entry. The hole is enlarged continuously. Fascia and rafter tails are chewed away, soffit panels are levered and split, decking at the entry gets damaged, and on a frame chimney the chase corner opens up.

Caching. Nuts and cones stored in insulation and duct runs draw their own succession of insects and rodents, and a cache left in place after the animal is gone keeps working as an attractant.

Scent. The least visible item and the one that determines whether the problem recurs. A cavity that smells of a previous occupant advertises itself to the next squirrel in the neighborhood. Removing an animal and leaving the scented material is leaving a vacancy sign up.

What evidence confirms it, and where do you look?

From the ground and from inside the cavity — and daylight is the most useful single indicator in a dark attic.

From outside. Walk the full roofline with binoculars before you put a ladder against anything. Look for a defined hole with pale, freshly gnawed wood at its margins, which darkens over subsequent weeks and therefore tells you whether the entry is being actively worked. Look for a dark greasy stain and worn edges around an opening where an animal passes repeatedly. Look for a lifted or split soffit panel, a gable louver with a torn corner of screening, a ridge vent end cap that no longer sits down, chewed fascia, and nesting material — leaves, shredded bark, insulation fibers — protruding from a gap or lying in the gutter beneath it. Then look at the approach: which limbs overhang, which service drop lands where, whether ivy runs to the eave.

From inside. In the attic, look for daylight first, because a gap that admits light admits an animal. Then look for compressed runs pushed through the insulation, which map the routes; for nesting material gathered in a corner or between joists; for droppings, which are larger than a rat’s and more barrel-shaped, often concentrated near the nest; for cached nuts and shells; for gnawed wiring, torn duct and disturbed vapor barrier; and for staining on the underside of the sheathing near an entry.

From the noise. Time of day separates gray squirrel from raccoon and from bat. Weight separates a squirrel from a rodent. The location of the sound, referred back to the outside inspection, tells you which bay is occupied and roughly where the nest sits.

From the yard. Chewed nut shells on a deck rail or a windowsill, gnawed corners on a wooden playset, damage to a shed, and the animal itself using a fixed route across a fence or a wire at the same time every morning. Watching for twenty minutes at first light is often more productive than an hour in the attic.

Leave the evidence in place until it has been seen. Cleaned insulation and swept droppings remove the map.

Why does trapping on its own not finish the job?

Because a trap addresses the occupant and the actual problem is the opening.

Four things happen when removal is the whole of the work.

The hole stays open. Nothing about a trap changes the building. The entry is available the following day to any animal that finds it, and it is now a proven entry rather than a candidate one.

The cavity keeps advertising. Scent-marked material in an occupied attic carries information to other squirrels: shelter here, previously suitable. Attics cleared without sealing are reoccupied at a noticeably higher rate than attics that were never occupied at all.

The population refills. Removing one gray squirrel from a wooded street in Suffolk County does nothing measurable to local squirrel density. A vacated territory is simply taken.

It can strand young. Removing an adult female during the dependent period produces exactly the outcome a badly timed one-way device produces, and does it without anyone noticing until the odor starts.

Hands-on removal has real uses — an animal loose in living space, one trapped in a flue, a case where the geometry of the entry makes a device unworkable. It is a tool used inside an exclusion job rather than a substitute for one, and it is used by a licensed wildlife operator rather than by whoever happens to be on the roof.

Which is the practical reason a squirrel job splits across two firms. The removal is licensed animal work and it goes to a nuisance wildlife partner firm that does nothing else. The sealing is a sheet metal and carpentry job at the roofline, and it is the whole of what Graduate has been doing since 1983. Almost every squirrel job on Long Island ends when the animal leaves, with a one-way door coming off a soffit return and nothing rigid going on behind it. That is why the same house calls again.

How is a squirrel excluded properly?

In a fixed sequence, with the timing question answered before any of it starts.

Survey the whole envelope, not the hole you were shown. Every soffit return, fascia run, valley, dormer, vent, louver, chimney and roof-to-wall junction gets looked at, because a building that produced one entry was built with several identical weak points.

Establish the species and whether young are present. This determines whether the work proceeds now or is scheduled, and the timing is checked against current state wildlife guidance rather than assumed.

Seal every secondary opening first. This is the step that gets skipped and it is what makes the device work. If a roofline has five ways in and only one carries a device, the animal uses one of the other four and nothing has been achieved. The primary entrance is deliberately left as the last remaining route.

A licensed operator fits the one-way device on that entrance. New York licenses nuisance wildlife control separately from pesticide application, so the device is set by a wildlife partner firm holding that credential rather than by us. For squirrels it is typically a sprung or hinged door, or a short tube with a door at the far end, mounted tight over the opening so the animal can push out under its own weight and cannot get purchase to come back. Squirrels leave a cavity to feed every day, so the device works with the animal’s ordinary routine rather than against it.

Watch the entry. Fresh gnawing at the device, sound in the cavity, new droppings and disturbed material all say the structure is still occupied. Only when there is nothing does the device come off.

Close permanently, to a specification that matches the animal. Heavy-gauge galvanised hardware cloth, sheet metal at gnawable edges, purpose-made vent guards, sound structural lumber where a member has been chewed away, and mechanical fasteners rather than adhesive. Caulk is a finish laid over metal, and foam does not enter the work at any point, because the animal that opened the hole treats cured foam as one more soft material to get through.

Reinforce the identical details elsewhere on the same building. Close one hole on a house with six matching weak points and you have bought a fortnight.

Screen what has to keep breathing. Ridge vents, gable louvers, soffit vents and exhaust terminations exist to move air, so they get correctly sized metal screening fitted from behind rather than being blocked. Sealing a working vent to keep an animal out trades a wildlife problem for a moisture problem in the roof assembly.

Clean up and verify. Remove fouled and compressed insulation where it is significant, clear caches, address the scent-marked material, repair torn duct and vapor barrier, flag chewed wiring, and come back after weather to check the work — because squirrels test a new seal hard and any weakness shows quickly. What about a squirrel in a chimney or inside the living space?

Different urgency, and the first question is whether the animal is resident or trapped.

A masonry flue and a metal liner are both smooth vertical shafts. A squirrel that comes down one can very easily be unable to climb out, and what the household hears as scrabbling above the damper is often an exhausted animal at the bottom rather than a settled tenant. That is a same-day matter, not a scheduling matter, and the resolution is usually assisted escape rather than anything more elaborate. On frame construction the chimney chase is a separate issue: it is a large hollow column, the top pan rusts through, and an animal in the chase is in a cavity that connects to the roof structure.

An animal loose in a room is a containment problem before it is a wildlife problem. Close the internal doors, open one exterior door or window wide, darken the room otherwise, keep pets and people out, and give it a clear route to daylight. Do not chase it, and do not corner it — a frightened squirrel in a confined space does considerable damage to window casings, screens and furnishings trying to get out, and that is where the rare bite comes from.

The permanent fix for the flue is a properly fitted, properly secured cap that sheds rain and excludes animals while allowing the flue to draw. Loose-fitting caps are levered off. The chase gets a sound top pan and closed corners. Neither is exotic work, and both are cheaper than an annual removal.

What keeps them off the building?

Removing the approach, closing the details before autumn, and maintaining the parts that fail.

Trim the approach. Overhanging limbs are the primary highway onto a roof, and cutting them back far enough that the jump is not on offer removes the route rather than the animal. Ivy on a wall is an escalator, and ivy against a fascia is an escalator that arrives at the door. Vines, trellises and arbors that touch the building do the same. A fence line running into a wall is worth interrupting.

Close the roofline before the autumn wave. Soffit returns properly closed with rigid material. Gable louvers rescreened from behind with metal. Ridge vent end caps reseated and torn mesh replaced. Fascia gaps closed. The soffit-to-fascia channel secured where a panel can be levered. This is the highest-value work on the list and it has a deadline attached, because a building sealed in late summer never acquires the autumn tenant.

Cap the chimney and check the chase. A cap that fits and is fastened, not one that sits on friction.

Remove the incentives at ground level. Bird feeders are squirrel feeding stations with a bird-shaped hobby attached, and a feeder within jumping distance of a roof is worse than one in the open. Fallen fruit and nuts under a tree, spilled seed in a garage, and an uncovered compost bin all concentrate animals against the building.

Maintain the details that wear out. Vent screening corrodes. Soffit panels loosen. Fascia softens where a gutter overshoots — and that is worth noticing, because the same overflowing gutter that softens a rake board is also feeding a carpenter ant colony behind it. A short walk around the building each year with binoculars, looking at the roofline rather than the lawn, catches most of what matters.

Watch after trade work. Roofers, gutter contractors and siding crews cut and open things. After any work at the eaves, look at what was left.

Common questions

How do I know it is a squirrel and not a rat or a mouse?

Listen to the clock. Squirrels are active in daylight, with the heaviest movement shortly after first light and again in the late afternoon. Rodent activity in a wall or ceiling is lighter, faster and mostly after dark. Squirrel noise also includes rolling and dragging, which is caching behavior and nothing a mouse does.

What if the noise overhead happens at night?

Then it is probably not a gray squirrel. Night activity in a roof cavity points to a flying squirrel, a raccoon or a bat, and the three sound entirely different from one another. A raccoon is heavy and deliberate, a flying squirrel is light and quick, and a bat colony is a soft chittering that rises in hot weather.

Can a squirrel really chew through the side of my house?

Its incisors grow continuously, so gnawing is a requirement rather than a habit. A squirrel will open weathered cedar, plywood soffit, thin aluminum, vinyl trim and cured expanding foam without much difficulty, and it usually enlarges an existing gap rather than starting a hole from nothing.

Why does the maternity question change my schedule?

Because a one-way device cannot distinguish a parent from a nest. Fitting one while flightless or immobile young are inside lets the adult out and seals the litter in, where they die in the cavity. Timing is governed by state wildlife guidance and is checked before any exclusion work is scheduled.

Will the squirrel just leave on its own in the spring?

It may leave and it will very likely come back, or something else will take the same opening. A cavity that has held a squirrel carries scent that reads as suitable shelter to the next animal, so waiting without sealing usually converts an acute problem into an annual one.

Is chewed wiring in the attic a real concern?

Yes, and it is the risk homeowners take least seriously. Cable sheathing is a soft chewable substrate lying across the top of the ceiling joists, and stripped conductors against framing or insulation are a fire condition. Assessment of damaged wiring is an electrician's work; flagging it is ours.

There is a squirrel in my chimney. Is that the same job?

Related but handled differently. A flue is a smooth vertical shaft an animal can fall into and fail to climb out of, so the first question is whether it is trapped rather than resident. The permanent fix is a properly fitted cap, and the chase on a frame chimney needs checking too because the top pan often rusts through.

Do you relocate the squirrels you remove?

Not as a matter of routine. Relocation is regulated, is frequently poor for the animal, and resolves nothing that sealing would not resolve better, because the territory it vacates is simply occupied by another squirrel from the same neighborhood.
